It was a hundred years ago two months ago that the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade played the decisive role in capturing Rafa (9 January 1917), the-then last remaining Ottoman outpost in the Sinai Peninsula.

This victory brought an end to what had been the most successful British military campaign of the war so far - the Sinai Campaign (March 1916 - Feb 1917). As much a brilliant feat of British engineering and logistical management as anything else - the British built a railway and water pipeline from Kantara along the Suez Canal to El Arish near the Sinai-Palestine border. 

Damien Fenton will delve into the Sinai-Palestine campaigns of the First World War during 1916-1917.
