South Sudan cinema

From Nights, 7:10 pm on 28 January 2015

Auckland-born Melbourne-based film-maker and documentary producer Samuel Richards became galvanised to volunteer in South Sudan after trying to plan a trip to the area and coming into contact with the local Sudanese refugee community in Melbourne.

Richards is putting his skills and knowledge to work by providing a cinema to more than two hundred homeless, lost and orphaned children based at the Nhomlau Children's Centre, victims of a 30-year civil war.

The solar-powered cinema setup will be used to share news and information including health education at community meetings, to bring messages of good will from Sudanese people living in Australia, and - of course - to show movies and documentaries.

Samuel Richards tells Bryan Crump more about the project, and the response to the first screenings.
