Originally aired on Nights, Thursday 30 December 2010

Ray Avery was born in 1947 in England to violent alcholic parents who neglected and abused him. His mother even tried to sell him at one point. Incredibly Ray Avery has risen to becoming the 2010 recipient of the Peter Blake medal for leadership, and he's the inaugural New Zealander of the Year. Mostly Ray is known for his work with Fred Hollows the Kiwi born Australian Eye Surgeon legend.
