Getting kids to grow, harvest and prepare their own food

Children growing their own

Six years on from its launch, the Garden to Table trust is teaching kids in 21 schools around the country how to grow, harvest and prepare their own food.

Catherine BellThe trust was set up in 2008 by Catherine Bell who says the loss of knowledge in society of how to feed ourselves has had a profound social and environmental impact.

When a school signs on to the programme, students get hands-on lessons from specialists in the kitchen and garden and learn to grow their own produce and turn it into delicious meals.

Catherine Bell says children involved in the programme are learning to love food, and not be afraid of it. She says most end up eating a much bigger variety of vegetables and fruit than they ever did before - because they have grown them themselves.
