Are full-time, unpaid internships exploitative?

Students' advocates say university students, and those who have just graduated, are being asked to work more, and longer, for free, with promises of getting their feet in the door in their industry of choice. But do the promises stack up? And why are some organisations, particularly in the development and political sectors, asking students to work full-time, 40-hour weeks for free?
