New laws requiring Australian telcos to store information about their customers email, land-line, mobile and internet use come into effect today. The Mandatory Data Retention Regime requires the time, location and recipient of emails and phone calls to be stored for up to two years. Australian internet service providers and civil liberties groups have lobbied against the law which was introduced on national security grounds by the former Gillard government. At the time the current Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, spoke out against it saying he had "very grave misgivings".
