Could fast regional rail really work?

Transport lobby group Greater Auckland's plan for a fast rail service connecting Auckland with Tauranga and Hamilton, and smaller towns in between, and claims it would help boost growth in a region where more than half the country's population live. The proposal is for a regional network with 17 trains that can travel up to 160 kilometres an hour - at the cost of 1-point-4-5 billion dollars.
