Polio reappearing in conflict zones

From Nine To Noon, 9:38 am on 14 May 2014

Dr Bruce Aylward is the head of the World Health Organisation's polio eradication programme. As the Assistant Director-General for Polio, Emergencies and Country Collaboration he brings together WHO's work in polio eradication, humanitarian response and country cooperation. Earlier this month the WHO has declared polio as a public health emergency of international concern. There's been a significant increase in cases this year, particularly in conflict zones including the Middle-East and Central Asia. Of major concern is that the virus has been reappearing in areas, where it have previously been eradicated. Syria was polio free for 14 years, before an outbreak last year.
