Marching Girls

From New Zealand Society, 2:20 pm on 21 March 2014

Marching New Zealand was first established in the 1930's during the Depression era, as a way for young women to maintain health and fitness. It became a popular and accessible sport for young girls and women who would compete in National and local competitions, and it was also common to see teams performing in community events and parades. Training usually took place in the outdoors (preferably grassy fields). Sonia Sly takes an inside look at what it takes to become a Marching Girl beyond the sweaty boots, headache-inducing head gear and military precision when she heads to the 2014 Marching Competitions in Porirua City.
