One In Five

Sunday nights at 7:06pm, repeated Tuesdays at 12:30am

Sunday, 31 January 2010: The case for more humane rest-home care; and we're dining in the dark

When Metro Magazine teams up with Tim Tams to put on a dining in the dark experience at Clooney's restaurant, they risk putting themselves offside with the Blind community. Afterall, donning a blindfold before hoeing into slap up feed might seem a tad offensive to blind people. This week Mike Gourley checks out the Dining in the Dark experience firsthand. And to make sure he's not crossing a line, he's accompanied by blind community advocate, Martene Abel.

Nancy Pachana is an associate professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland. She's made a career out of researching and advocating for more humane rest-home care. In this interview Nancy Pachana argues that working with older disabled people is one of the best ways to effect change in support services.
