Controversy and concern over welfare reform now that it's firmly in the court of National's election year policy platform. (28′07″)
It promised to be the biggest shakeup in the welfare system since the Welfare State first came into being way back in 1938. But owing to the tragic events in Christchurch back in February, the final report from the Welfare Working Group - released at the same time - didn't attract much attention. That's until recently, when Prime Minister, John Key, announced that the recomendations would be considered by government as part of the National Party's policy work on welfare leading into this election.
Then, Social Development Minister, Paula Bennett, announced the formation of a Ministerial committee to consider the Welfare Working Group's Report. But the composition of that committee has got disability rights advocates fuming.
The Green Party's disability spokesperson, Catherine Delahunty MP and DPA policy researcher and Welfare Justice member, Wendi Wicks are deeply critical of where welfare reform is headed.
