Phineas Gage

A special  BBC Health Check  programme on  the extraordinary case of Phineas Gage, a 19th century railway worker injured in  a bizarre accident when an explosion shot an iron bar up into his skull above his eye and out through the top of his head. He survived, but his personality and behaviour were considerably altered. For the first time, this was evidence that the brain affects the way we behave, and the scene was set for the mapping of the brain functions. (BBC)
