One In Five for Sunday 15 July 2012

This week One in Five visits Kilmarnock Enterprises which has been providing employment for people with disabilities for more than 50 years.

Kilmarnock Enterprises was founded by Christobel Robinson, an educationalist who felt there were few work opportunities for disabled pupils. She formed the Canterbury Sheltered Workshop Association which won its first industrial contract from Suckling Bros.

These days there are 71 staff members who carry out a range of assembly line work as well as the packaging of food and other products and skilled craft work. The staff are also able to expand their skills into other areas of the business, including office work, reception and health and safety. The jobs are a mixture of light industrial work and craft which see workers doing everything from shrink wrapping food to building children's toys.
