Journalist and former comedian Mark Thomas is the author of Belching out the Devil: Global Adventures with Coca-Cola (Ebury Press, ISBN: 978-0-09-192293-1).

9:05 Lord Bingham

Thomas Bingham, KG, Baron Bingham of Cornhill has held many of the most senior judicial offices in England. He became Master of the Rolls in 1992, then Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales in 1996, and recently retired as Senior Law Lord, a position he has held since 2000 in the House of Lords, the UK's highest court of appeal. Lord Bingham is a strong advocate for divorcing the judicial branch of the House of Lords from Parliament by setting up a new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. He gave the Robin Cooke Lecture for 2008 ("What is the Law?") at Victoria University's Faculty of Law on 4 December.

Karl Maughan has been painting gardens since the mid-1980s, and his concentration on this subject has made him an internationally recognised New Zealand artist. His new exhibition runs at Page Blackie Gallery from 9-23 December.

Music biographer Philip Norman is best known as the author of the 1981 book, Shout! The Beatles In Their Generation (Fireside, ISBN: 978-0684830674). His new book, John Lennon: The Life (HarperCollins, ISBN: 978-0-00-727825-1), was written with the support of Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir George Martin.

Ian Brodie is the founding director of the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum in Wanaka and author of several books including A Journey through New Zealand Film, Cameras in Narnia, The Lord of the Rings Travel Diary, The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook and the aviation series Warbirds over Wanaka. In 2005 he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to tourism. His new photographic book, Ian Brodie's New Zealand: One Man's Love Affair with His Country (HarperCollins, ISBN 978-1-86950-696-4), has just been published.
