8:15 Edward Peck

Edward L. Peck is a retired career United States diplomat who served in the U.S. Foreign Service from 1956 to 1989. He served as Chief of Mission in Baghdad in the Carter Administration and later held senior posts in Washington and abroad. He also served as a Foreign Service Officer in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, and as Ambassador in Mauritania. At the State Department he served as Deputy Director of Covert Intelligence Programs, Director of the Office of Egyptian Affairs and as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, and as deputy director of the White House Task Force on Terrorism in the Reagan Administration. He is president of consulting firm Foreign Services International, working with governments, businesses and educational institutions.

8.45 Julian Glover

Julian Glover has been the chief leader writer for The Guardian since 2006. He launched the Guardian Unlimited Politics website ahead of the 2001 general election, before joining the paper's news desk. He worked with John Major on the former prime minister's autobiography and at the Economist and on several BBC Radio documentaries.

Sherman Young is acting Head of Department of Media, Music and Cultural Studies at Macquarie University, where he teaches new media theory and production, with a research focus on the cultural impact of new media technologies. He is a passionate book lover, and author of The Book is Dead, Long Live the Book (UNSW Press, ISBN: 9780868408040). Sherman is a guest speaker at the Digital Publishing Forum conference, The Future of the Book, to be held on 24-25 June in Auckland.

Canadian-born Cantabrian Eleanor Catton won the Adam Prize in Creative Writing for her debut novel, The Rehearsal (Victoria University Press, ISBN: 978-0-86473-581-2), which has been since sold to publishers in the UK, the USA, and Europe. She also won the 2007 Sunday Star-Times short story competition and was awarded the 2008 Glenn Schaeffer Fellowship which enabled her to attend the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Eleanor is a finalist in the Fiction and First Book categories at the 2009 Montana New Zealand Book Awards.

Violinist Richard Adams is the front man for the quartet Nairobi Trio. He is also an established abstract artist who has been exhibiting internationally for over 25 years. With multi-string player Nigel Gavin, he has just released a new album, Recent Works (Ode); they perform at the Wellington Bluegrass Society in Petone on Sunday 14 June.

Bruce Connew is a photographer. His photographic essay, Cutting Off Dissent, appears in Lost and Found, the Spring 2009 issue of Granta magazine (ISBN: 978-1-9058-8105-5). He has just self-published his latest photography book, I Must Behave (Vapour Momenta, ISBN: 978-0-473-14629-0), and the exhibition of the same name featuring 85 images taking a sideways glance at behaviour, was shown at the Mary Newton Gallery in February, and is open now at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth (to 30 August). His previous books include I Saw You (Vapour Momenta, 2007, ISBN: 978-0-473-12457-1), and Stop Over (Victoria University Press, ISBN: 978-0-86473-557-7), which features a story by Brij V Lal.
