Dr Carolyn "Kim" King of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Waikato is an international authority on all aspects of the biology of small mustelids (stoats, ferrets and weasels), and author of the 2007 book with Roger Powell, The Natural History of Weasels and Stoats (Oxford University Press New York). At the recent Hamilton Science Excellence Awards, the KuDos Awards, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement prize for her research and work to develop footprint tracking tunnels that are now routinely used to monitor stoat and rat densities on protected lands.

New Zealand singer-songwriter Gin Wigmore released her debut album, Holy Smoke, in 2009; it has now sold triple-platinum. Gin returned from her new base in Australia and from touring the USA for the Vodafone NZ Music Awards on 7 October, winning Album of the Year, Best Pop Album, Highest Selling Album, and Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Gin starts her Grave Train tour in Auckland on 9 October, followed by concerts in Hamilton (10 October), Palmerston North (12 October), Wellington (13 October), Christchurch (16 October) and Dunedin (17 October).

Chris Bourke is a writer, journalist, editor, music historian and radio producer. His biography of Crowded House, Something So Strong (Pan Macmillan Australia, ISBN 0-7329-0886-8), was published in 1997, and his new book is Blue Smoke: The Lost Dawn of New Zealand Popular Music, 1918-1964 (Auckland University Press, ISBN: 978-10-86940-455-0). Chris will give an illustrated talk at Nelson's Suter Theatre on 21 October as part of the
Nelson Arts Festival.

Karen Dawn is the founder of the animal advocacy group, DawnWatch.com, and author of the 2008 book, Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way We Treat Animals (HarperCollins, ISBN: 978-0-06-135185-3).
