Stephen Fookes chairs the National Council of New Zealand Wool Interests, an organisation representing the interests of woolgrowers, merchants, exporters, brokers, first stage processors, wool certification bodies and research bodies. He recently returned from Wool Week in London, the latest profile-raising event from The Campaign for Wool, launched in January by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.

Dr Peter Donelan is Senior Lecturer at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research, Victoria University of Wellington. He will talk about Benoit Mandelbrot, best known as the father of fractal geometry, who died last week.

9:45 Tanja Jade

Auckland artist Tanja Jade, best known under the pseudonym Misery, will leave behind that persona at an exhibition and auction (29 October - 6 November), before departing to the border of Burma and Thailand as part of the Little Lotus project. This will see her join three other New Zealand artists to teach art to refugee and orphan children, and on her return write and illustrate a picture book based on the experience, with all proceeds going directly to refugee children.

Composer and singer Dudley Benson released two EPs in 2006 (Steam Railways of Britain; The Orders, Medals & Decorations EP) and the album The Awakening in 2008, all on his Golden Retriever Records label. He will release his second album on 1 November, Forest: Songs by Hirini Melbourne, an interpretation of bird waiata by the renowned Māori composer, before embarking on a nationwide tour of ten intimate venues, with his new ensemble, the Dawn Chorus.

Janet Frame-Cutmore is the daughter of George Frame, brother of New Zealand writer Janet Frame. She spoke at the Autism NZ conference in September.

11:10 Patrick Evans

Professor Patrick Evans has taught English literature at the University of Canterbury since 1978. His 1977 book, Janet Frame (Twayne, ISBN: 0-8057-6254-X) was the first biography of the writer, and his third novel, Gifted (Victoria University Press, ISBN 978-0-86473-637-6), is an imagining of the 1955 relationship between Frame and Frank Sargeson.
