Chandran Nair is the founder and CEO of the Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT), an independent, pan-Asian think tank based in Hong Kong. He is the author of Consumptionomics: Asia’s Role in Reshaping Capitalism and Saving the Planet (Wiley, ISBN 978-0-470-82857-1), and is a guest at the 2012 Auckland Writers and Readers Festival, delivering the Michael King Memorial Lecture on 12 May, and a Business Breakfast on 11 May..

Dr J. Hampton Atkinson MD is co-director of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California, which coordinates rigorous scientific studies to assess the safety and efficacy of cannabis and cannabis compounds for treating medical conditions.

9.40 Marti Anderson

Professor Marti Anderson is Chair of Statistics at the Albany campus of Massey University, and is a marine biologist and deep sea diving enthusiast who has created a unique statistical tool and software programme used worldwide for assessing and monitoring environmental impacts on a vast range of ecological scenarios and species. She was the youngest person to become a full professor in statistics in New Zealand, and the first woman professor in mathematics, statistics or computer science in this country.

Sam Wills, who performs as The Boy with Tape on His Face, had sell-out shows at the NZ International Comedy Festival in 2011, before a successful run of shows in the UK including appearances on the Royal Variety Performance in December, and the Comedy Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. He interrupts his current tour of the UK to return home for this year’s Comedy Festival with a new show, More Tape, in Auckland (8 May, 14-19 May), New Plymouth (9 May), Hamilton (11 May), and Wellington (12 May).

Emily Perkins is a short story writer and novelist whose 2008 book, Novel About My Wife, won the fiction medal at the Montana NZ Book Awards and the Believer Book Award in the United States. She convenes the Masters of Creative Writing programme at the University of Auckland, and hosts the books’ programme The Good Word on TVNZ7. Her new novel is The Forrests (Bloomsbury, ISBN 978-1-4088-0923-5), and she is a guest at the 2012 Auckland Writers and Readers Festival (9-13 May). Emily is one of the opening speakers at storytelling series True Stories Out Loud, which runs for four Saturdays at 5.30pm from 28 April at  Vault at Q, 305 Queen Street, as part of the Comedy Festival.

11:40 Tim Blanks

Tim Blanks wrote for Auckland music magazine Hot Licks in the early 1970s, and is now a contributing editor for global online fashion site Style.com, and writer for US Vogue and other magazines. Tim has returned to New Zealand from London with Jeff Lounds for an ‘In Conversation with…’ event about their fragrance brand, Escentric Molecules, at Takapuna retail outlet The Department Store.
