Steve Keen is associate professor of economics and finance at the University of Western Sydney, and was one of a minority of economists to predict the current financial crisis. The revised and expanded edition of his 2001 book, Debunking Economics: The Naked Emperor Dethroned? (ZedBooks, ISBN 978-1-84813-992-3), was published last year.

Dennis P. Gordon is a Principal Scientist at the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA), and review coordinator and editor of The New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity (Canterbury University Press, ISBN 978-1-927145-28-9). This trilogy of volumes, now available as a box set, is the result of a decade-long project to review and inventory New Zealand’s entire Phanerozoic (living and fossil) biodiversity. It is the most comprehensive undertaking of its kind, involving 238 contributors in 19 countries.

Dan Neil is the motoring critic at the Wall Street Journal. He was a senior editor at AutoWeek, contributing editor to Car & Driver and the New York Times, and staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, where he won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2004, the only car correspondent ever to do so. Dan features in the documentary Revenge of the Electric Car, which is screening in the 2012 Documentary Edge Festival.

Music historian, DJ, and author Bill Brewster runs the DJHistory website with Frank Broughton. They co-authored the 1999 book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: the History of the Disc Jockey (Headline, ISBN 9780755313983), and 2010 book The Record Players: DJ Revolutionaries (DJhistory, ISBN 978-0956189639). Bill is currently on his first Australasian DJ tour, culminating on Saturday 26 May at Ink Bar, Auckland. He is also holding a free evening seminar, in association with the British Council and Hit It & Quit It, at Red Bull Studio (limited seating), College Hill, from 7.30pm on Friday 25 May.

 

11:05 Alan Breslau

Chemical engineer Alan Jeffry Breslau survived the crash of a commercial airliner in 1963 and spent the next five years in hospital undergoing 52 operations for his burn injuries. In the late 1970s, he started an international burn support group, The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, and the annual World Burn Congress, and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards for his work with the burn community worldwide. He moved here with his New Zealand wife Delwyn in 1998, and published The Beauty of Disfigurement: How to Cope with Looking Different (Zenith, 978-0-473-17406-4) in 2010.

 

11:45 Eli Kent

Eli Kent is an actor, filmmaker, poet and playwright, who wrote his first full-length play (Rubber Turkey) when he was 19. His multi-award-winning third play, The Intricate Art of Actually Caring, was originally performed in his bedroom and has since toured New Zealand. It is currently playing at Wellington’s Downstage (to 3 June), where his company The PlayGround Collective are one of three resident companies, before touring to small towns and community venues with the assistance of Arts On Tour NZ. The Auckland Theatre Company production of his new play, Black Confetti, will open on 28 June at the Herald Theatre.
