8:15 Damien Echols

At the age of 18, Damien Echols was convicted on murder charges in the state of Arkansas, along with Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr (afterwards known as the West Memphis Three). He received the death sentence and spent 18 years on Death Row until his release last year, with Baldwin and Misskelley. The West Memphis Three are the subject of Paradise Lost, a three-part documentary series, and West of Memphis, a documentary produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh which screened at this year's New Zealand International Film Festival. Damien Echols tells his story in Life After Death: the Shocking True Story of an Innocent Man on Death Row (Text Publishing, ISBN: 978-1-922079671).

British journalist Caitlin Moran is a columnist for The Times, and was voted Press Awards Critic of the Year 2011, and Interviewer of the Year 2011. She was on the programme last year, talking about her memoir, How to Be a Woman (Ebury Press, ISBN 978-0-09194-073-7), and has follwed that with the first collection of her columns, Moranthology (Ebury Press, ISBN: 978-0-09194-903-7). 9:45 Art with Mary Kisler

Mary Kisler is the Senior Curator, Mackelvie Collection, International Art, at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. She will discuss Meridian Lines: Contemporary Art from the Museum of New Zealand, featuring the work of seven artists (Yuk King Tan, Michael Parekowhai, Bill Hammond, John Pule, Ani O'Neill, Gordon Walters, Ralph Hotere) curated by Sarah Farrar at Te Papa. Meridian Lines will travel to China as part of a major international art exhibition for the reopening of the Shanghai Art Museum, in October. 10:05 Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg is an English alternative rock musician and left-wing activist who has been recording and performing for over thirty years. He is bringing his new two-part show to New Zealand, with performances in Auckland (12 October), Wellington (13 October), the Otago Festival of the Arts in Dunedin (14 October), and a benefit performance in Christchurch (16 October). The first half of his show celebrates the legacy of the American singer-songwriter and folk musician Woody Guthrie; the second comprises songs from Bragg’s fourteen-album catalogue.

 

11:05 Gabriel Machovsky-Capuska

Gabriel Machovsky-Capuska is a biologist from Argentina who is based at Massey University's Albany campus to study the foraging and feeding behaviour of the Australasian gannet (Morus serrator). He is part of the university's Coastal Marine Research Group, and recently submitted his doctoral research, which investigates the workings of the gannet's remarkable physiological attributes, such as its optical powers which adjust between air and water in 120 milliseconds to enable them to hunt for prey. He's also studied the related risks of the gannets' gift for high-speed diving, and the chance of a lethal collision with another gannet in pursuit of fish.
 

11:35 Reuben Ferguson

Reuben Ferguson works as a water resources scientist for engineering consultancy Opus in Wellington, and is a dedicated cyclist. In March 2011 he left England on a cycling journey that took him across Europe, Asia and Australia, arriving in Whanganui in April 2012. He documented the journey on his blog, Home in No Hurry.
