Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart
I am a sucker for strings and Keith Stanfield’s (AKA Darius from FX Network series Atlanta) moping deep-gaze in the new music video for ‘Cold Little Heart’. This is the epically-long opening track from Michael Kiwanuka’s 2016 Love and Hate LP (which Nick Bollinger has already cast his knowing ears across), but the video is brand new (disclaimer: it is okay to discover things a year later). The moody, bleak images enhance the sonic retro palette of this song. The reverby tunes, the washed-out backing vocals and hand claps hark back to late-60s Memphis, and yet the bass and guitar grooves keep things rooted in Kiwanuka’s current meditations on struggle and strife. The perfect accompaniment as Autumn’s chill pulls us into the shade of winter.
