Spectrum

with David Steemson, Deborah Nation & Jack Perkins

Sunday at 12:15 pm, repeated at 12:30am Tuesdays and 7:30pm on Wednesdays.

Sunday, 27 May 2012: Te Kainga Hostel, a Home Away from Home.

Christchurch was a centre for Maori Trade Training schemes in the early 1960s, and a number of the boys taken from their rural homes and introduced to city life, and to city work, lived at the Kainga Hostel in Hansens Lane. The hostel opened for Maori trade trainees in 1962 and closed in 1992.

Trainees remember with affection the Australian man, Bill Cox, who packed a tent in his car and travelled around the North Island meeting the boys in their home environments before they joined him later at the hostel. His was the only familiar face in a city of strangers. Four former Trade trainees, along with the first man to run the hoste, Bill Cox, (then in his 90's) got together at the Rehua Marae to remember te Kaianga.

(The programme was first broadcast in 1992.)
