As part of our series with Audio Culture's Simon Grigg, where we take another look back at our musical history, Simon Morris asks him about one of the true founding fathers of New Zealand music - Charles Begg.

Begg, who was a piano-maker and publisher, came to Dunedin from Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1861.

Soon after he opened a music shop and built the first piano in New Zealand in 1865.

His family business ended up becoming the major purveyor of musical instruments in the country for 110 years.

In fact, without Begg there might not have been any New Zealand music at all.
