Sunday for 23 August

8:12 Insight : Sub-standard student housing

Run-down flats and bitterly cold conditions are a fact of life for many students at Otago University in Dunedin. Some of the most substandard properties are highly sought after by students, and because of this, they command hefty rents.

But there's evidence poor housing can harm young people's health, so should landlords be taking the matter more seriously? Emma Lancaster reports from the heart of studentville in Dunedin.
Written and presented by Emma Lancaster.

Matt Sanders is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director, Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland. He speaks about different approaches to parenting.

9:05 Mediawatch

9:30 Feature interview: Professor Hew Strachan

10:06 The Sunday Group: Road Safety

Today's Sunday Group looks at the issue of road safety. Earlier this week, the 'Safer Journeys' discussion document was released by the Ministry of Transport. Included are 60 potential initiatives to improve road safety in New Zealand. Joining Chris will be Dr Samuel Charlton (Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Waikato and member of the Traffic and Road Safety Research Group), Leo Mortimer (Acting General Manager - Land Transport, Environment and Safety at the Ministry of Transport) and John Gottler (Vice-President of the New Zealand Traffic Institute).

10:40 Hidden Treasures

Each week Trevor Reekie takes you on a trip that seeks out musical gems from niche markets around the globe, the latest re-releases and interesting sounds from the shallow end of the bit stream. This week, Trevor reels out a diverse collection of sounds that includes a new release from Auckland's Opensouls, a dash of Nubian wedding music and a tip of the hat to an American national treasure who passed away recently, Les Paul.
Produced by Trevor Reekie.

11:05 Ideas : Cycle Friendly Cities

We've heard a lot recently about John Key's Great Rides Cycle Way, a network of cycle tracks aimed at the recreational and tourism markets. But the vast majority of cyclists do most their riding in cities and towns. Ideas this week takes a look at the concept of cycle friendly cities.
