Sunday for 14 February 2010

8:12 Insight: Targeting Young Arsonists

Insight looks at a world-leading fire intervention programme in New Zealand which targets young arsonists, and the research that suggests it could be used to reduce the risk of other more serious offending.
Written and presented by Sue Ingram

8:40 Simon O'Neill - Singing Wagner

Tenor Simon O'Neill's gone from playing rugby for Ashburton College, to playing leading roles at New York's Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden. He's back home to sing Wagner at the New Zealand International Arts Festival.

9:06 Mediawatch

Last weekend, The Herald on Sunday newspaper splashed a TV presenter's same-sex relationship across its front page. Was this a harmless celebrity scoop, or a gross invasion of privacy in which there was no legitimate public interest? Either way - is it also a sign our Sunday papers are turning ever-more tabloid? Also on Mediawatch: The Manawatu Standard's editor and his stand against a court ruling shielding a prominent local person from shame - and how TV3 rated the Reserve Bank governor less newsworthy than . . . a pie.
Produced and presented by Colin Peacock and Jeremy Rose.

9:40 Peter Walsh - Too Much Stuff

Peter Walsh reckons that clutter isn't just about what's on your floor, but also about what's going on between your ears. He talks about stuff - and how too much of it can drag us down and harm our relationships.

10:06 Nigel Roberts - Politics and Other Passions

Nigel Roberts, professor of Political Science at Victoria University and long-serving election-night commentator has just retired from full-time work after more than 40 years of teaching. But, as he tells Chris, politics isn't his only passion.

10.40 Notes from the South with Dougal Stevenson

Dougal is disturbed when tolerance and friendship are seemingly undermined by vengeance and the petty need to make a point.

10:45 Hidden Treasures

Each week Trevor Reekie takes you on a trip that seeks out musical gems from niche markets around the globe, the latest re-releases and interesting sounds from the shallow end of the bit stream. This week Trevor digs up a truly rocking piece of Sunday gospel music and also pays a tribute to the charismatic Pauly Fuemana.
Produced by Trevor Reekie

11.05 Ideas: Jeanette Fitzsimons: The People, Writers and Philosophies that Inspire Her

Jeanette Fitzsimons retired from Parliament this week after 13 years as an Alliance and then Green MP. Despite having never sat on the Government benches there would be few, if any, commentators who would question Jeanette Fitzsimons profound impact on New Zealand politics. As the co-leader of the Green Party from 1995 to 2005 she was instrumental in raising the environment towards the top of the political agenda. Today in Ideas we hear about the people, writers and thinkers who have influenced Jeanette Fitzsimons. They include: economist Herman Daly, Ghandi, the founding editor of the ecologist magazine Teddy Goldsmith, charismatic German Green leader Petra Kelly, and her father.
