8:12 Insight TPP Worries

Talks to form a Pacific-wide trade deal are coming down to the wire with the 12 nations in the Trans Pacific Partnership expressing confidence a deal could be done by the end of the year. But the talks are controversial, and not just in New Zealand. Patrick O’Meara talks to those for and against the deal in other nations. Are the benefits and concerns raised similar to the arguments here? And can they be overcome?

8:40 Oliver Sutherland – ILG Sutherland: Ahead of His Time

Ivan Sutherland (1897-1952) was a scholar, cultural anthropologist and social activist who was committed to a bicultural New Zealand. He was involved in the debate over NZ’s eugenics movement, the development of publicly-owned broadcasting, and the entry of Jewish refugees to NZ before and during the Second World War. Ivan’s son, Oliver, sheds light on his father’s life and work in a new biography which also details the difficult relationship Ivan had with philosopher Dr Karl Popper, Ivan’s colleague at Canterbury University College.
Paikea: The Life of ILG Sutherland, by Oliver Sutherland, is published by Canterbury University Press.

9:06 Mediawatch

Mediawatch looks at how a big magazine publisher has been caught out running stories from overseas as if they were local ones, and a misleading newspaper story that angered the Irish in Christchurch. Mediawatch also explores how new money is firing up new news outlets in Australia; and if the media are fuelling our fear of crime.
Produced and presented by Colin Peacock and Jeremy Rose.

9:40 Colin Duriez – The Real CS Lewis

Colin Duriez is an authority of CS Lewis, whose notable works include The Chronicles of Narnia, and Mere Christianity. He talks to Chris about the real CS Lewis – and the friendships and events that shaped the man and his writing.
The A-Z of C.S. Lewis: The definitive guide to his life, thought and writings, and C. S. Lewis: A Biography of Friendship, both by Colin Duriez, are published by Lion Hudson.

10:06 Ideas Saving our Rivers

In this Ideas hour we look at the pressure on our rivers. The big issue is water quality – the impact of urban wastewater and agricultural runoff on waterways – but there are quantity issues too. How much can be taken from a water course without compromising its ecological viability? We talk to Sue Millar about the Silverstream river restoration project; Hera Smith, director on the board of Te Wai Maori Trust; Dr Clive Howard-Williams, Chief Scientist Freshwater and Estuaries, at Niwa; and Professor Gary Jones, former chairman of the International River Foundation.
Produced by Jeremy Rose.

11:12 Murray McCully – Global Perspective

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully talks to Chris about the range of this job, including the government’s foreign policy agenda, ups and downs at MFAT, the Security Council bid, and relations with our Pacific neighbours.

11:40 Wayne Brittenden’s Counterpoint

A new book that’s just out, Peace, Power and Politics, by Maire Leadbeater, details the mass actions that led to New Zealand becoming nuclear free. Wayne looks at why mass protests on that scale are no longer part of our political landscape. Chris follows up with former Auckland University academic, Tony Watkins.
