Talks to form a Pacific-wide trade deal are coming down to the wire with the 12 nations in the Trans Pacific Partnership expressing confidence a deal could be done by the end of the year. But the talks are controversial, and not just in New Zealand. Patrick O’Meara talks to those for and against the deal in other nations. Are the benefits and concerns raised similar to the arguments here? And can they be overcome?

Ivan Sutherland (1897-1952) was a scholar, cultural anthropologist and social activist who was committed to a bicultural New Zealand. He was involved in the debate over NZ’s eugenics movement, the development of publicly-owned broadcasting, and the entry of Jewish refugees to NZ before and during the Second World War. Ivan’s son, Oliver, sheds light on his father’s life and work in a new biography which also details the difficult relationship Ivan had with philosopher Dr Karl Popper, Ivan’s colleague at Canterbury University College.
