Neurologist Dr Juan Carlos Arango-Lasprilla is an expert on the psychological, emotional, family needs of people with brain injury.

He tells Wallace Chapman he got into the field as a psychology student 20 years ago when his brother had a traumatic brain injury and at that time there were no rehabilitation hospitals in Colombia.

Dr Arango-Lasprilla says the brain is the most important organ in sexual function and individuals with brain injury are more likely to have sexual problems, ranging from erectile dysfunction to hypersexuality and inappropriate sexual behaviours.

“I think if sexuality is a very important part of our lives, the treatment of sexuality problems should be included as part of the rehabilitation treatment for traumatic brain injury."

Dr Juan Carlos Arango-Lasprilla is in New Zealand as a guest of Auckland University's Centre for Brain Research.
