Late to the party

From The House , 5:40 am on 3 May 2018

The first speech of an MP often reveals their vision, acknowledges their background, and outlines the direction they hope their political career will take.

Most MPs give their maiden speech shortly after an election in the Address in Reply Debate but sometimes new MPs enter the fold when another one resigns.

Earlier this year National MP Steven Joyce resigned after ten years in the job making room in the House for Nicola Willis.
