Street vendors selling hot dogs and coffee are part of the scenery in New York. But with loads of illegal food carts, Sarah di Gregorio says the city's cracking down. (12′30″)
Bill Thompson with the latest technology news. Vodafone looks a twit on Twitter and Microsoft's software deal with the NZ government could be turning to custard. (13′34″)
First up this week we get nutty with the peanut - except it's not even a nut but a pea! We'll speak to a nutty food historian and meet a bloke killing possums and rats with peanut butter, then we test the smooth vs crunchy dilemma with chimps at the zoo. The results will astound you! Finally consumers in the US are finding it increasingly different to tell the difference between smooth, crunchy and extra crunchy peanut butter and the confusion's affecting sales. We speak to a researcher measuring the consistency of spreads on the market. She wants a better labelling regime and consistent industry standards.
Before the 1pm news we grab a table at the 'Restaurant of the Future' in the Netherlands. Scientists are watching the way diners behave on hidden CCTV cameras. It's all part of an experiment to research the way we behave when we're out for a meal.
After the news at 1:10pm we're out and about foraging for free food - this week we're on the hunt for puha and its close relative the dandelion in a suburban park. Also taste testing dandelion coffee and puha and dandelion pakoras...yum!
Then at about 1:30pm we're off to New York where street vendors selling hot dogs and coffee on every street corner are part of the scenery. But with just 3,000 legal permits there's a massive blackmarket and loads of illegal street carts. Now the city authorities are cracking down.
And before we go Bill Thompson beams in with the latest technology news. This week Vodafone New Zealand looks like a twit on twitter. All was working well - it gave Vodafone a personal voice, problems got solved and customers seemed happy - obviously the perfect time to stuff around with it, and the response hasn't been too positive! Plus Microsoft's bulk software deal with the New Zealand government looks like it could be turning to custard. So is the government going to go open source with its software like Brasil?
