The Small Print
First up this week Tom Mueller. He's just written 'Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil'. The scandalous side? Well he's uncovered widespread adulteration and food fraud in the global olive oil industry, with pure olive oil being blended and bulked up with other inferior, cheaper oils.
Also, with New Zealanders drizzling, sautéing and frying their way through about 4 million litres of olive oil every year how easy is it to find fresh, good quality, extra virgin olive oil here that meets international standards? In short, it's not as easy as it could be. Last year tough new Australian olive oil standards weren't adopted in New Zealand, after opposition from the Food and Grocery Council, and from the big supermarket chains themselves.
After the 1pm news, more clean technology and something that's related to the story we looked at last week about boom and bust in the US renewable energy. The Guardian's environment editor John Vidal has just been looking at a shortage of the rare minerals that go into things like solar panels and electric car batteries. And skyrocketing prices could jeopardise future growth in the renewable energy sector.
And before we got at around 1.30pm we're off to The Hearing House . It's a charity based in Auckland that's using hi-tech cochlear implants to help deaf and hearing impaired children to listen and speak.
