It's here - the big day when the bees arrive at my place. The hives are painted, we've waxed the plastic frames where the bees will start to build comb (where the queen will lay eggs and the workers will start collecting pollen and making honey).
David Carleton, our bee mentor has been raising the 'nuc', bee jargon for nucleus of a hive, (literally a mini colony) and today I'm up early to collect the bees and then move them into their new home. For most new beekeepers this is how you'd get your first colony going, and a good starting point is your local bee keepers club.

The kids painted the hive. Right, all closed up until next week.
This is a photo of my young queen - note the longer brown abdomen and she's not got any black lines - isn't she cute.
