Extreme weather events are being across the world now, as global warming makes its impact felt on the climate.

But new research has shown there was extreme weather in the Antarctic in the early 20th century, and it may have played a part in the race to the South Pole by Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Falcon Scott during the warm summer of 1911.

Chris Turney is a Professor of Earth and Science at the University of New South Wales and author of 1912: The Year The World Discovered Antarctica.
