When The Angels Sing                               Martha Tilton …Big-band songbird "Liltin'" Martha Tilton enjoyed her greatest renown during her two-year stint with the Benny Goodman Orchestra.

When The Bloom is On the Sage             Beverly Hill Billies, an old time string band, formed in 1930 who belted out hillbilly stuff.

Tea For Two                                                        Art tatum  One of the greatest improvisers in jazz history, Art Tatum also set the standard for technical dexterity with his classic 1933 recording of "Tea for Two.

 I’ve Got A Pocket Full Of Dreams             Russ Morgan – his coal-mining father played the drums, and his mother was a pianist in a vaudeville act, so it’s little wonder that young Russ began to study piano before he was 14. 

Just A Gigolo                 Bing Crosby, one of the best selling bass-baritone voices of the 20^th Century with over half a billion records in circulation.

Rockin In Rhythm           Duke Ellington, the man who said “Music is my mistress, and she plays second fiddle to no one”.

Sweet And Lovely      Gus Arnheim penned his most popular song in 1931. He is best remembered for his orchestra which enjoyed an eight-year run at the famed Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

The Clouds Will Soon Roll By           bert Ambrose Orchestra.  The bandleader discovered many of the top flight singers of the 30s, Vera Lynn (of course), Sam Browne, Elsie Carlisle, Denny Denis, Evelyn Dall and later the pop singer Kathy Kirby, with whom he had a long affair despite the 40 year age gap.

 Donkey Serenade                                Alan Jones with his best known song.  It was originally a Rudolf Friml piano piece called Chanson – and he fashioned the song from the piano piece for his Operetta The Firefly in 1912.

Once In A While                               Frances Langford was a star of the Golden age of Radio  - and while she was singing one night Rudy Vallee invited her to become a regular on his extremely popular Radio Show. From there she went to Dick Powell’s Radio Show and later appeared with Don Ameche on The Bickersons – then she made several movies including playing herself singing Chattanooga Choo Choo with the Modernaires on The Glenn Miller Story.

CD2/7 (Swing) Shuffle Off To Buffalo                           Hal Kemp started out leading bands with a 1920s Collegiate Jazz sound – then in the early thirties he changed it all around to become more of a sweet dance band.

Gimme A Pigfoot And A Bottle Of beer     Bessie Smith, the Empress Of The Blues – the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 30s – one of the greatest singers of her era, and with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists.

Goody Goody              Benny Goodman.  There is not really an official date for the Swing era but some historians say it was an evening in August 1935 when Benny Goodman’s Band cut loose with their hottest numbers at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles – the youthful audience swarmed to the front of the bandstand and cheered the change in direction.  Swing was IN.
