    Women with the Right Stuff

Pilot and aspiring astronaut Wally Funk pays tribute to the pioneers, meets some of the women involved within today’s space industry, and hears from the woman who might be among the crew for the first human mission to Mars.  Wally herself undertook secret tests to become an astronaut in 1961 and, along with 12 other female pilots, passed the extremely tough physical tests to become an unofficial member of the ‘Mercury 13’ – the women who, given a chance, could have gone into space before Russia’s Valentina Tereshkova made history. (BBCWS)

    Beyond Binary

In communities around the globe, non-binary people are rejecting the categories of ‘male’ and ‘female’, and attempting to redefine gender identity. Queer, gender-queer, gender-fluid, gender-variant, third gender – these are all terms non-binary people use to describe themselves. In this  BBC World Service Identity Season programme, Linda Pressly hears stories from activists who are part of this contemporary movement.

    Abducted Because of My Faith

Iftikhar Khan was a highly successful lawyer in Quetta in Pakistan, with a lifestyle to match. He acted as legal advisor to several banks as well as the United Nations. He was also a member of the Ahmadi community: a minority group which defines itself as Muslim, but is not accepted as such by many in mainstream Islam. In Pakistan, Ahmadis are prohibited by law from claiming that they are Muslims. Many have suffered threats, physical violence and worse. For Iftikhar, all went relatively well until in 2010, when he was abducted by armed men on his way to work. They held him blindfolded and in chains for 20 days, and left him in no doubt about why they had taken him: because of his Ahmadi faith. Eventually released for a ransom, but under threat of further violence, Iftikhar and his family fled to Britain.(BBCWS)
