Tradesman found guilty of tax evasion for second time

An Auckland tradesman has been convicted on tax evasion charges for the second time, and sentenced to ten months home detention.

Sonny Te Kanawa Walker was found guilty in the Manukau District Court of not filing tax returns, not accounting for GST and income tax, and a range of other tax-related offences totalling more than 440-thousand-dollars over six years.

The self-employed carpet layer was found guilty of similar charges in 2009.

Inland Revenue says Mr Walker's actions were calculated, deliberate and inexcusable.

It says there's no way Mr Walker didn't understand his responsibility to file returns and pay tax, as he'd already been convicted once.
