11:06 am on 31 August 2015

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit the lower North Island this morning.

GNS Science is describing the earthquake, which was centered 5km south of Eketahuna, between Palmerston North and Masterton, as strong.

The quake hit at 7.52am and was relatively shallow, at 8 kilometres deep.

A worker in a petrol station in Eketahuna says it felt like a rolling motion, and nothing fell off the store's shelves.

Police say they've so far had no reports of damage or injuries.
