Food prices have fallen, driven by cheaper groceries and meat, poultry and fish.

Official figures show prices fell half a percentage point last month after July's 0.6 percent rise.

Grocery prices were down 1.8 percent with signs weak dairy prices are feeding through to superrmarket shelves.

Volatile fruit and vegetable prices rose 3.1 percent.

For the 12 months to August, food inflation slowed with prices rising 0.4 percent compared with July's 1.2 percent annual gain.

Food prices make up about a fifth of the official inflation measure.
