Submissions on Earthquake Commission Act close today

Submissions on the proposed overhaul of the Earthquake Commission Act review close today.

Earlier this year, the government announced several major reforms to the act.

These include scaling back land cover, so payments would only apply to situations where homes could not be rebuilt on original sites, and doubling the commission's building damage cap to $200,000.

A spokesman for Gerry Brownlee, the minister responsible for the commission, said 32 submissions on the review had been received.

He said draft legislation would be drawn up by the end of the year, and it would go to the House next year.

More than 100 Christchurch homeowners this week launched a group action against the commission, saying it had failed to meet its obligations for payments and repair standards.
