New Brighton fishermen tackle bad behaviour

1:56 pm on 21 September 2015

People fishing off Christchurch's New Brighton pier appear to have improved their behaviour in response to calls for them to be banned.

The Southshore Residents Association has asked for the ban amid claims fishers have been crowding out other people, damaging the pier's railings and leaving behind a mess.

The Burwood Pegasus Community Board will this evening hear from council staff about options for fixing the problem.

But ward councillor David East said he had already noticed fishers making more of an effort to share the pier.

He said it would be nice to think the issue could be resolved without having to resort to more draconian measures.

Mr East said a final decision on the proposed ban could be months away.
