Govt considers report on sex offender's release

3:38 pm on 30 September 2015

The government is considering a report into the case of murderer and sex offender, Phillip John Smith, who flew to Brazil last year while on temporary release from prison.

He was eventually arrested and returned to New Zealand.

The government commissioned a report to investigate several matters, including Smith's ability to get a passport under his birth name, without it triggering recognition of his usual name.

It also looked at his release from prison and his supervision while at large.

The report was done by a former judge John Priestley and retired diplomat Simon Murdoch.

The report is now being examined by government ministers, and no date has been set for its release.
