Quake-damaged grave headstones slowly repaired

Repairs have been completed on many of the 1100 headstones damaged by earthquakes in Canterbury's Selwyn district.

All but one of the district's 19 cemeteries were damaged in the September 2010 earthquake, which was centred near Darfield, with more damage in the February 2011 quake.

The District Council said repairs had been finished at 13 cemeteries, including Prebbleton and Kirwee, with the remainder on track to be finished by next June.

Council's spokesman Douglas Marshall said some of the damaged headstones dated back to the 1870s.

Mr Marshall said rods installed to secure the headstones' foundations often left them stronger than new ones.
