Wind whips Canterbury burn-off into large fire

3:46 pm on 4 October 2015

A blaze sparked by burn-offs that raged for three hours outside the township of Woodend, just north of Christchurch, has been extinguished.

Fire Service shift commander Riwai Grace said six brigades were called to the fire about 10am this morning.

Mr Grace said the fire ground is currently being covered with foam and high pressure water hoses.

He said the fire fire was started by burn-offs and took a long time to control, due to its size and the strong winds striking the area.

There were no reports of risk to property or life.
