A former United Nations General Assembly president has been charged - along with five others - in relation to an alleged bribery scheme.

John Ashe, a former UN ambassador from Antigua and Barbuda and the assembly's president in 2013, is accused of taking bribes from a Chinese businessman.

New York prosecutors allege he took $UA1.3 million, spending the cash on luxury goods.

Prosecutors say helped real estate mogul Ng Lap Seng gain government contracts.
