National earthquake drill 'important for improving public awareness'

6:06 pm on 11 October 2015

Civil Defence says a national earthquake drill to be held this week is important for improving public awareness of what to do in the event of a quake.

Nearly 1.2 million people are so far registered for the ShakeOut drill set for 9.15am on Thursday.

Civil Defence acting director David Coetzee said while most people were aware of what might happen in an earthquake, not everyone knew what to do.

The ShakeOut drill was last held in 2012.
