A two-and-half year old Hastings boy remains in a critical condition with injuries the police believe were not accidental.
Officers were called to the child's home about midday yesterday.
He is being treated for head injuries in Hawke's Bay Hospital's intensive care unit.
A 17-year-old male has been charged with assaulting a child, and was due to appear in the Hastings District Court.
