Community housing providers are unveiling an ambitious plan to house 50,000 people by 2020, but say government backing is needed to fix some regulatory barriers and help attract investment.

Community Housing Aotearoa co-chair Julie Nelson has told delegates that the draft plan called Our Place is based on the vision that all New Zealanders can be well housed.

She said the sector, which generates $1.3 billion in annual revenue, has the capacity to do this, but will need government backing to attract investors.

Providers said the government also needed to clear up uncertainty around their charitable tax status, and consider alternatives to their traditional tendering process.
