Police say a woman who was killed as she walked along a highway in Southland early yesterday was an Australian citizen.
The 37-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a car shortly before 1am on State Highway One, about five kilometres from Bluff.
Detectives are trying to piece together the events which led to her death, which they say remains unexplained.
They said the woman was walking on the highway wearing a blue jacket and pink shoes, and they wanted to hear from anyone who saw her there any time after 9pm Sunday night.
A post-mortem has been carried out and a number of vehicles have been examined.
