The Fire Service responded to 14 Guy Fawkes-related fires overnight - including one started by children using fireworks at a playground.

It has now been called out to 23 such incidents since fireworks went on sale on Monday.

The service's national advisor for fire risk management, Todd O'Donoghue, said most of the fires started in vegetation and rubbish but one started on the rubber surface of an Auckland playground.

He said last night's 14 fires compared to eight on the same night last year.
