Unitec has confirmed it is cutting jobs in student services and contracting them out to a private multinational company.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Auckland-based polytechnic said its restructuring of student services would lead to 87 redundancies in total.

Unitec chief executive Rick Eded said the end goal was to ensure graduates were enterprising, employable and could meet the future needs of public and private enterprise.

The cuts are the first stage in a $250 million restructuring that will see up to 300 jobs lost over the next three years.
