A man has died after a tanker containing bitumen exploded in Otorohanga this afternoon.
Police said emergency services were called to an earth moving company in the King Country town at about 1pm.
Fire Service said they found a man with serious burns after being covered in tar.
They tried to revive him with CPR, but he died at the scene.
A police investigation for the coroner is underway, and they said no more details about the victim or the circumstances of the explosion were available.
WorkSafe New Zealand is investigating but would not comment on the incident.
